Digital Mammography

Digital Mammography

Aspen Valley Hospital (AVH) has offered mammography and other breast diagnostic services for many years, and thanks to the Aspen Valley Medical Foundation and the Aspen Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, digital mammography is offered to our breast care patients. This technology helps find more breast cancers early, when effective treatment is most likely.

After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer to affect U.S. women; mammograms are the best tool for detecting the disease. While conventional mammograms find up to 90 percent of breast cancers, digital mammography may detect even more. In fact, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2005 found that digital mammography may be superior at detecting breast cancer in women who are younger than 50, have not experienced menopause, or have dense breast tissue. In addition, digital images can be manipulated, thus improving the "readability" of the image, and they require even less radiation than the very low dose radiation associated with conventional mammograms.

"Debbie, the mammography tech, is awesome, friendly, talkative, cheery, and makes the yearly 'vice grip' procedure a good one. And I love the new digital imagery that allows you (and me) to see the images immediately."
