Preventing Sunburn

Skin cancer is the most serious concern related to sunburn. But a more immediate concern for the vacationer to Aspen and Snowmass Village is that a severe sunburn can ruin your trip. That's right. Every year, we see many people in our emergency department and doctors' offices who are suffering because they didn't realize how bad a sunburn could be. It's easy to prevent, so please follow our advice:
  • Ski suits and gloves protect the body, and hats protect the head. But your face is unprotected, so be sure to apply sunscreen of at least SPF 15 to your face and ears and neck.
  • Reapply sunscreen at least every four hours. If you're perspiring or getting wet from snow or water, apply it more frequently.
  • Wear a good pair of sunglasses with adequate UV protection; the eyes can burn too.
  • Don't forget, you're at risk even if it's a cloudy day.
For a physician referral, call (970) 544-1296 or email Ginny Dyche.

"We were on vacation in Aspen, and coming from a big city, we were nervous and unsure. Your entire staff, from the person at the ER entrance to the nurse that checked us out (six days later) was amazing. I would choose Aspen Valley Hospital over any in the Chicago area where I live."
